Acid reflux complaints plague doctor's offices and emergency rooms more then ever these days. Just about everyone at some point will suffer from symptoms of acid reflux. There are ways to stop acid reflux, but once you get it there are no easy cures. Taking steps to stop acid reflux before it starts is the best way to avoid the complications that can arise from acid reflux disease.

Most people can stop acid reflux by making some simple dietary changes. Foods high in fat can cause acid reflux symptoms. Other foods like citrus and acidic fruits and veggies, certain spices, and even some candies that contain chocolate or peppermint are triggers of acid reflux as well. Caffeinated beverages such as coffee and sodas can produce symptoms. Watch out for decaf coffee, too. You are the only person who can know which foods cause your acid reflux symptoms.

Some acid reflux causes may require lifestyle changes that aren't as simple to achieve, but making these changes could not only stop acid reflux, but will certainly make you a healthier person. Smoking cigarettes introduces toxins into the esophagus that can break down the lining and cause acid reflux over time. Some of the ingredients in alcoholic beverages, particularly in beer, can weaken the muscle that stops the acid from leaving the stomach, which is what causes acid reflux. If you cannot quit smoking or drinking on your own, get help from social support groups or your doctor. These are lifestyle changes that will ensure you a longer, healthier life.

Antacids are a common way to relieve acid reflux. Taking too many antacids, however, can actually have a reverse effect. The acid in your stomach that backs up to cause acid reflux is necessary for digestion of your food. When you take too many antacids, your stomach will make up for it by producing even more acid. Eventually there will be too much acid and it will have nowhere to go but up into the esophagus, causing acid reflux symptoms.

Changing your eating habits can be as useful as changing the foods you eat to stop acid reflux. Eat smaller meals more often and be sure to chew your food well in order to allow for better digestion.

There are many herbal and natural remedies that have been proven to stop acid reflux. Some people can alleviate symptoms with a mixture of apple cider vinegar and water, others need a little extra help so they add a bit of baking soda. Aloe vera juice can be quite helpful for acid reflux symptoms and can be found at any health food store. Some other remedies include pickle juice and cherry juice - yummy! Give some of these a try and see if they can stop your acid reflux symptoms.

If after you have tried all of these remedies you still suffer from acid reflux, give your doctor a call. He can prescribe medications to stop acid reflux. Be sure to let him know what other things you are trying on your own so that he can recommend the best medication for you. The best way to stop acid reflux is to be proactive and get it before it gets you.
